STORY: Around Ausangate
20 of 31 : The Former Hacienda
Leaving the high valley you will find the ruins of a hacienda. This is called the hatun (big) hacienda, the buildings in the upper valley are called the uchuy (small) hacienda. Formerly here lived a landlord of Spanish descent, who not only owned the land, but also the people. He could extract services, money and goods at will from them, and abuse was the rule. This system was called the ‘Pungu’, and although legally not slavery it had important traits of it.
